That's Gowser's World Cup spot confirmed now. Suppose that makes it a wee bit more exciting.

I think that's the whole problem with the World Cup for me now, though. Back in 86 when I watched my first one, you could actually imagine or see some of the players signing for Hearts. As I recall, hibs signed a boy from Northern Ireland after the WC for example.

Now though? Football has mutated into such a disgusting, bloated animal that we couldn't even get a chance of farting in the same room as a player from even one of the shittiest countries. For example, you reckon we could afford a Costa Rican? They've got players in Germany, Spain, Belgium, Greece and the States - and this was a country to be laughed at 25 years ago.

I guess what I'm saying is that the World Cup is like watching folk dine on the rarest of sirloin, whilst knowing you're eating shoe leather for the rest of your life.

Can't get myself geed up for it.

I'll watch what I can but I'll not be going out of my way to watch any games other than the final - but even then it'll depend on what sides make it.

The first world cup i remember watching was 82. I was only 3 1/2 in 78 so Spain 82 was great. Scoring 5 goals against New Zealand i thought we were world beaters (conveniently forgetting that Brazil had pumped 4 past us) only for Hansen and Miller to fuck it up against the Russians..... 86 was guid because i enjoyed watching us play Denmark and Germany and i quite enjoyed Italia 90 and France 98. Since then though, i've not really got into it - 1) because there is no Scotland and 2) because as IJ points out - football itself is ridiculously overhyped and financially crazy.

I'll watch some games if they're on and i'm in front of the TV and i'll make a point of watching the final - because it's the WC final but that's it. I've really not much interest in it and i couldn't actually name 90% of the players that are playing either.

What i know will happen is that some 'stars' will sign for EPL sides for ridiculous money (transfer and wages) but they won't be world cup winning stars and they'll be in the main pish in comparison to what is being paid for them. England will get papped out and that's about it.

I always look forward to the World Cup. Especially looking forward to the fact I won't be watching it on BBC/ITV this time, so no "Let's get the latest from the England camp" at half-time in every game.

Aside from Scotland not being there, I think there are 2 issues I don't like about the WC these days:
1) Too many teams, too commercial, makes the whole thing bloated
2) No surprises coming into the tournament. It used to be a rare opportunity to see all the best players compete against each other. All these "stars" probably played against each other in the Champions League in the past 12 months.

There's probably a rose-tinted view in all this but there is less magic the to WC than there used to be.
